The 20th anniversary Barrathon was run in bright sunshine and with an abundance of good humour on Saturday (June 29th).
The popular summer event draws homecomers and visitors alike to the island and this year set a pre-registration record, with all 300 places for the half-marathon run snapped up within three minutes of opening in January.
In the event 280 runners set off on the hottest day of the year to run the round-Barra course, with even those toiling up the hills showing excellent spirit. Fun runners and junior fun runners swelled the numbers, and the festival spirit was maintained in town with a funday at Barra children's centre.
First placed with a time of 1hr 12mins 23secs was Cameron Milne of the Lekker Lopers, Barra Blunderer James Macleod coming up close behind him in second place at 1:21:07. First lady was Jennifer Wetton of Central Athletics Club in 1:26:02 and first veteran male was Willie Rennie, coming in ninth overall with a time of 1:27:54. The full list of times and finishers is available at https://www.barrathon.org.uk/barrathon-results.
Barrathon is one of the Heb 3 – a series of five half-marathons with runners eligible for placing if they enter three or more of the events. The last event in that series is now the Harris half marathon on Saturday (July 6th).
The pictures show runners Roddy Lyle, Conor Nangle and Chris Macpherson, and Emma Scaramuccia with Catriona Maclean, all in fine fettle and caught in action by Rosie Schneider photography.
