As agreed, the charge made for the advertisement will be refunded to the Lewis Carnival Committee and an additional donation made to support this excellent local cause.

HERE ARE THE DETAILS…

 

This year we chose two very special charities, inspired in part by 2018 being The Year of Young People. We wanted to help give young people a chance to have a great life by supporting Action for Children and Western Isles Women’s Aid.

Action for Children help disadvantaged children across the UK, helping them through fostering or adoption, providing children across the country with support they might not otherwise have.

Western Isles Women’s Aid supports women, children and young people who have experienced domestic abuse. The charity work’s tirelessly to provide specialist outreach, support, advocacy services and refuge.

The Carnival is delighted to be able to contribute to these much-deserved charities who work so hard without ever seeking recognition for the amazing things they do every day.

Stramash

This year we would again like to thank Paul Matheson and Stramash for their help with Carnival Set up. They are providing us with all the necessary generators, sound systems, and electrics. Stramash provide a much-needed platform (literally, metaphorically...) for young bands to perform. If any bands or musicians wish to perform at the Carnival Day too please get in touch!

Carnival Merchandise

This year we are delighted to present our very own Carnival Merchandise!

We will be selling tea towels, tote bags, and Carnival Candles (by Sandwick Bay Candles). All proceeds from the sale of these items will be going towards supporting our charities.
Alice Macleod – our inhouse print designer – has created our tea towel and bag designs. Alice is an artist and printmaker specialising in in blockprinting. She graduated from Norwich University of Art with a degree in Fine Art in 2013. She produces handprinted textiles, artwork and home products.

Sandwick Bay Candles are hand made by Megan Macdonald. The candles are made in small batches using 100% natural soy wax, premium fragrances and pure cotton wicks. Soy wax is natural and biodegradable. We hope you love the scent of the Carnival candles as much we do!

Harbour Day

We have joined forces with the Stornoway Port Authority and will be jointly hosting Carnival and Harbour Day together on Saturday 4th August. The Harbour board are providing our Perceval Square marquee along with a number of the inflatable and boat related activities!

Carnival Day

On Carnival Day look out for an array of Pursuit Hebrides inflatables – Bouncy Castles of assorted shapes and size, the Disco Dome, Gladiator Duel and the nerf gun target shot! If you’re looking to hire fun activities for your own event check them out at www.pursuit-hebrides.co.uk.

If you fancy running a games stall to raise money for your own charity or organisation then get in touch, too.  We have stalls available in Perceval Square and the Town Hall.

This years confirmed stalls include – Taigh Dubh Candles, Inga Sweets, Sandwick Bay Candles, Lewisian Nice, Moran Gaol, Misty’s Hebridean Treasures, The Body Shop at Home, Befriending Lewis, Embark Project, RNLI, TIG, In Tweed We Do, LHYCA, LHYCA (running a games stall), & Stornoway Primary (who will be selling helium balloons!).

The Leanne Fund will be running afternoon tea in the Town Hall raising money towards their own charity which works to significantly improve the lives of young people living with Cystic Fibrosis.

If you are looking for summer activities the Western Isles Library are running Lego and coding drop-in’s for kids!

CARNIVAL FOOD

The Thai Restaurant pop-up will be available in Perceval Square, and Porkies will be serving up burgers and hotdogs. If you are a restaurant or mobile food service please get in touch! We’d love to have an array of food available for the Carnival hoards.    

We also be running Carnival Cakes – if you are a keen baker and would like to make us a cake please do! Cakes can be dropped off in the town hall on Friday evening (August 3rd) or at the marquee in Perceval Square on Saturday morning.

HARRIS CARNIVAL

Rural Nations (an artist-led production company based in Stornoway) are presenting the Harris Carnival which will be delivered over four days (1st to 4th August) for their Creative European Partnership project, ‘Reclaim the Future’.

The new Harris Carnival and Arts parade will be taking place in Tarbert on Friday 3rd August at 1pm. The community carnival making workshops are already running in Leverburgh Village Hall on Tuesday evenings making puppets and floats some of which will then be coming to Stonoway on Saturday 4 for the Lewis Carnival.

The community projects in Performance and Carnival making started in June and are also running throughout July in Stornoway and Tarbert,

Look out for some of their street performers at the Lewis Carnival!

 

FLOATS
If you are considering entering a float into this year’s parade please get in touch! We can’t wait to see what creative designs you have come up with. As always a massive thanks goes to D.R.Macleods for the loan of lorries to be used as floats.

Don’t be put off though if you think a lorry is too big – we’d love the parade to be as much about people on foot, bikes, or smaller vehicles – the more varied the better! If you are part of a business, organisation, youth club, group, or just fancy a fun project for the summer holiday then now is the time to get creating.

VOLUNTEERS

The Carnival literally would exist without volunteers. The Committee has thankfully grown this year and we’d like to say a huge thank you to the new and old Committee members for giving their spare through the year to help organise this event.

Without volunteers for the day though the Carnival literally would not happen. If you want to see more bigger and better things on the day then we need more and more volunteers to run them!

FANCY DRESS

Make the most of the day and come in fancy dress! We will be giving prizes for best fancy dress in age categories – under 2’s, under 5’s, under 10’s, under 18’s and 18+!

If you’re in fancy dress you can also take part in the Parade which will be leaving from Willowglen at 1pm.

Big Thanks To Hebrides Alpha for putting up the Carnival Bunting nice and early this year to add the summer festivities and to An Lanntair for providing meeting facilities to the Committee and workshop space for the tea towel and tote printing.

 

CARNIVAL BALL

Saturday 11 August

This years Carnival Ball will include Welcome Drinks by Harris Gin, a three-course meal by The Caladh Inn, cocktails by Titchy Pitch, and music from Our Small Capital!

If you were unsuccessful with getting Ball Tickets we are selling dance tickets if you’d like to join in after the dinner.

We’d like to thank the businesses that have already offered their support with auction prize donations – we will be collections auction prizes (and tombola prizes for the Carnival) up until the end of July – please get in touch if you have something you’d like to donate!

The auction makes a massive difference to the amount of money we raise – last year our auction raised over £4,000!
