Urras Coimhearsnachd Bhràdhagair agus Àrnoil (UCBA) is recruiting for a Housekeeper, as detailed below. 

  • Job Title: Housekeeper
  • Job purpose: To ensure that Grinneabhat is kept in a clean and tidy condition, that the hostel is serviced, and that all linens are washed and dried in the laundrette.
  • Accountable to:  Ceannard Ghrinneabhat (Grinneabhat Manager)
  • Based at: Grinneabhat, North Bragar, Isle of Lewis, HS2 9DA
  • Hours: 20 hrs p/w including some weekend work.
  • Status: A permanent post, after a six-month probationary period
  • Starting salary: £9266.00 per annum, £8.91 per hour
  • Annual holiday entitlement:  28 days pro-rata, including bank holidays
  • Starting date: October 1 2021 

Background information

UCBA was set up to make Bragar and Arnol a more attractive place to live and work in for local people, by providing social, cultural and economic activities, and jobs.  Our refurbished, community-owned, building, Grinneabhat has community spaces, a café, a laundrette, and a four-room, 12-bed, hostel.  Staff include a Ceannard (Manager), a Community Officer and a Catering Manager. 

The Housekeeper post will be a key job in ensuring that all areas are kept clean and tidy, and that all covid-19 cleaning guidelines are followed. The housekeeper will also be responsible for cleaning and preparing the hostel rooms and doing the hostel laundry. 

There is the potential for the job to grow and become full-time, and also to take on a supervisory role if seasonal staff are required.

Key responsibilities:

Provide a high quality cleaning service that includes tasks such as vacuuming, mopping, dusting and emptying bins.  In the hostel, stripping and making beds, replacing used towels with new ones, cleaning rooms and washing and drying linens.

Offices, Corridors and Storage Cupboards

  • Dust/polish all surfaces including equipment
  • Vacuum, sweep and mop hard floors
  • Empty bins

Toilets

  • Cleaning and disinfecting all surfaces
  • Sweep and mop the floors
  • Clean sinks, taps, draining board and basins
  • Wash all towels, cloths, etc. in laundrette, and replace with clean ones
  • Clean each toilet
  • Empty bins

Cèilidh café

  • Wipe and disinfect all surfaces
  • Sweep and mop the floors
  • Empty bins

Hostel rooms

  • Strip beds, take bedding and towels to laundrette and wash/dry
  • Leave clean bedding and towels on each bed
  • Make up beds in fully accessible room
  • Wipe and disinfect all surfaces
  • Sweep and mop the floors
  • Clean sinks, taps, showers
  • Clean each toilet
  • Empty bins

Hostel kitchen

  • Clean and disinfect all surfaces
  • Sweep and mop the floors
  • Clean sinks, taps, draining board and basins
  • Wash all towels, cloths, etc. in laundrette, and replace with clean ones
  • Empty bins

Stairs

  • Brush and mop stairway

Laundrette

  • Clean and disinfect all surfaces
  • Sweep and mop the floor
  • Clean sinks, taps, draining board and basins
  • Empty all bins

 General maintenance

  • Notify Ceannard when materials are running low so that they can be ordered centrally
  • Notify Ceannard if repairs or replacements are needed to lights, fittings, bedding, etc
  • Wash all dirty dusters, mops, etc. in the laundrette 

Essential skills:

  • Interested in community work
  • Ability to work with others
  • Good planning and organisational skills
  • Good level of fitness for cleaning tasks
  • Previous experience of cleaning, including the uses of chemicals and using cleaning machinery safely a bonus, but training will be given if necessary
