Based: Main base - Comunn Eachdraidh Nis, Ness, Isle of Lewis

The successful applicant will be required to work across Northwest Lewis

Hours: Full-time - 35 hours per week

The need to be flexible is essential. This role will involve some evening and weekend work.

Contract: 1 year contract from appointment. Extension possible

Holidays: 28 days annual leave including public holidays

Job purpose/key tasks:

To take a lead role in creating and developing a Northwest Lewis Gaelic Plan working closely with key partners and wider stakeholders, in line with the National Gaelic Plan.

This will include working closely with community organisations throughout the area. The post holder will be an advocate of the Gaelic language in Northwest Lewis. Identifying, promoting and supporting existing Gaelic activity in the area and identifying gaps in provision.

  • Identify all current provision of Gaelic activities in the area including locations of provision (i.e. community hubs)
  • Identify gaps in provision and where improvements can be made
  • Measure effectiveness of current provision - regular feedback from current service users
  • Raising awareness of Gaelic
  • Collate existing Gaelic plans and policies relating to the area
  • Engage with a diverse range of age groups, Gaelic speakers and non-Gaelic speakers
  • Develop a Gaelic plan for Northwest Lewis
  • Include in the new Gaelic plan recommendations for future implementation
  • To report progress to the steering group regularly
  • To engage with media to raise awareness of the need for the Northwest Lewis Gaelic plan and report on progress
  • To explore funding opportunities to support empowerment of the Gaelic community. To ensure relevant conditions of external funding agreements are met in relation to monitoring and reporting, use of branding and evaluation.

Person specification: 





An understanding of the cultural context of Northwest Lewis and the Western Isles 

An understanding of Gaelic revitalisation efforts nationally, principally in the community sector 

Understanding of the 3rd sector 

Skills & Abilities 

Confident bilingual speaker. Excellent written and verbal skills in Gaelic and English 

Ability to build productive and successful working relationships both internally and externally 

Very good communication skills/people-oriented 

Good IT skills and good working knowledge of Office applications or equivalent 

Team working and flexible 

Ability to work independently, proactively manage workload and deliver to given timetables 

Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines 

Ability to build productive and successful working relationships both internally and externally


Knowledge of relevant national and local policy as well as knowledge of the Gaelic Language Act 

Knowledge of various social media platforms 

Education & Experience 

Degree level and/or equivalent experience/skills 

Qualification and/or experience/skills in Gaelic language, culture, marketing, communications or equivalent 


Willingness to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure Check 

Full driving licence and access to a vehicle
