A senior civil engineer from Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) has provided islanders with an update on work to upgrade the port at Uig in Skye.

The second outage of the port is currently scheduled for six weeks between Monday 30 October and 11 December, during which time the temporary bridge, existing linkspan, dolphins, bank-seat and temporary piles are all to be removed, with work carried out to complete fenders and to install and commission the new linkspan.

Senior engineer Ruairidh Campbell said preparation work for the second outage has included the final assembly of fenders, ahead of transportation to site.

Reinforcement and concrete work on the new linkspan dolphin and bankseat is continuing, while the berthing structure piling has been completed and main fill and tie bars are nearing completion.

Work is expected to begin this week on infilling the roundhead and good progress has been made installing precast cross heads and beams on the approach-way.

Work is also under way on the reinforced concrete deck and fitting of service trenches.
