One of the Western Isles' best known medical practitioners, Dr Brian Michie MBE, will reflect on his career and the evolution of emergency medical practices in a talk in Stornoway this week.

Dr Michie was awarded an honorary fellowship of the University of the Highlands and Islands for his sustained and longstanding contribution to the health and welfare of remote and rural communities in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

Dr Michie, will reflect on his extensive career and the evolution of emergency medical practice over the past 35 years. He is a distinguished medical professional with experience in emergency medicine and general practice. He serves as the Principal GP and partner at The Group Practice in Stornoway, where he oversees patient care and manages complex medical cases.

Dr Michie also holds the position of Medical Director for the UK-wide civilian Search and Rescue Service.

This is part of a venture where UHI North, West and Hebrides has partnered with the Institute of Engineering Technology to host a series of lectures at its Stornoway campus. Dr Michie's talk is at 6.30pm on Wednesday March 5.

Led by UHI lecturers as well as professionals within the local community, the free lecture series will also explore topical subjects in the engineering sector, including hydrogen and wind energy, artificial intelligence, and nano technology.

Coming up:

  • 26 March: Dr Chris Macleod – Artificial Intelligence: Be Very Afraid! Dr Macleod, a UHI North, West and Hebrides engineering lecturer, explores the technology at the core of artificial intelligence.
  • 28 May: Dr Alasdair Macleod – Hydrogen and Wind: A Perfect Match? Dr Macleod, a UHI North, West and Hebrides engineering lecturer, explores renewable energy as a reliable power source, and how combining wind and hydrogen generation could help.
  • 18 June: Dr Alasdair Macleod – Nano Technology: Small is Beautiful. Dr Macleod, a UHI North, West and Hebrides engineering lecturer, explores graphene – carbon atoms with electrical and thermal conductivity used in electronics, energy storage, composites and medical devices - and how nanomaterials make a big impact in our everyday lives.

Ally Macleod, an engineering lecturer at UHI North, West and Hebrides and IET Western Isles branch member, said: “We are delighted to partner with IET to host this series of free public lectures. Engineering is a dynamic sector, constantly evolving with technological advancements, as well as political, social and cultural shifts. It also faces a skills shortage amid unprecedented demand from renewable energy, aerospace and defence, infrastructure and construction. We hope this lecture series will highlight the opportunities in the industry, the role of colleges and universities in training, education and research, and key themes for the future.”
