Kay MacKay, who chairs Cancer Research UK’s Isle of Lewis Local Committee, earlier this year received a national award from Cancer Research UK in recognition of her outstanding contribution.  The charity’s annual Flame of Hope awards recognise remarkable efforts in fundraising and volunteering made by people from all walks of life.  Chosen from among 400 nominations from across the UK, Kay scooped an Honorary Fellowship award, given to those who have shown particular dedication and commitment to the charity.
Along with the rest of the committee at their meeting in the Western Isles Hospital last night, she is pictured with Murdina Macdonald, left and Joan Stewart, who have been on the committee since its start in 1975. The first meeting was held on October 8, 1975, in the Caberfeidh Hotel.
Kay began volunteering with the group in 1980 and then went on to lead the committee.  Under Kay’s leadership the committee raised a total of £60,000 in 2014 taking their total contribution to Cancer Research UK’s lifesaving work to more than £750,000 since their start in 1975.  This year marks the committee’s 40th anniversary.
