Western Isles Childsmile just gets better every year – and this summer’s campaign promises to be the best yet!
The dates for Childsmile across the Western Isles have now been set, so get in early to make an appointment for your child. This year’s theme is ‘Summer Festival’, so get ready for music, games and a laid back atmosphere!
Childsmile takes place every year during June and July, when dedicated kids’ weeks are held in dental clinics across the Western Isles. Each child that attends an appointment gets a dental examination and receives diet advice, toothbrush instruction and an application of fluoride varnish where appropriate. What is extra special about Childsmile is that appointments are really good fun for children, which means that attending the dentist is something to look forward to and enjoy.
Last year, around 1,800 children in the Western Isles attended a Childsmile appointment at their local dental clinic and feedback was 100 per cent positive, with ‘going to the dentist’ being seen as a fun activity by many of the youngest members of our communities.
So here are the dates for your diary...

Don’t forget to phone your local dental clinic to make an appointment for your child! It is never too early for a child to visit the dental practice, and it’s essential that they attend on a regular basis.
For each Childsmile Week, the dental clinic becomes a kids’ zone, and children are encouraged to have fun, play with toys and enjoy the activities on offer, so that dental appointments become something to look forward to. Games and competitions promote the key messages of maintaining good oral health and a healthy mouth.
NHS Western Isles Chief Executive Gordon Jamieson said: “Childsmile 2014 was one of the most widely available, best attended, most positively received events we have held here in the Western Isles. Most importantly, children love attending and look forward to Childsmile every year. We look forward to welcoming children to our dental clinics this summer, where you can not only learn about how to look after your teeth, but also to have great fun at the dentist!”
